“I am so excited to hear about the Schubert & Co. project. It is wonderful to hear more than the 100 songs that we regularly hear. There are so many hidden gems, particularly from his earlier years. Schubert for me is the song Shakespeare and seems, like Shakespeare, to understand everything there is to know about what it is to be human. We can all be excited, cheered and consoled by his genius. Bravo, guys, for embarking on this remarkable project!”

“Schubert & Co. is a unique project in its ambitions – to present the complete songs of Schubert in a single season – and its origins. While it’s rare in the New York concert scene that collaborative pianists invent and inspire a concert series, Lachlan Glen and Jonathan Ware have the passion and artistic vision to bring together dozens of talented young singers to bring this huge treasure trove of songs to life. The eagerness with which singers have responded to the idea suggests that they are hungry to explore this vast repertoire. Presented simply and directly, the concerts will bring the songs to life in the environment they were created for: intimate, unpretentious and apart from the commercial trappings of the larger concert world.”

“Schubert is my Shakespeare: every age and stage of man, woman, child (and a few supernatural creatures as well) appear in 600-plus of the richest songs in the art song repertory, and “Schubert & Co.” will put them all beautifully on display.”
- Susan Youens, Ph.D. (Internationally renowned and sought-after scholar, author and educator; author of eight books: “Heine and the Lied”, “Schubert’s Late Lieder: Beyond the Song Cycles”, “Hugo Wolf and his Mörike Songs”, “Schubert, Müller, and Die schöne Müllerin”, “Schubert’s Poets and the Making of Lieder”, “Franz Schubert: Die schöne Müllerin”, “Hugo Wolf: The Vocal Music” and “Retracing a Winter’s Journey: Franz Schubert’s Winterreise”)
Meet Schubert & Co., a group of artists committed to furthering the art of song, presenting the complete solo Lieder of Franz Schubert in New York City in a series of recitals spanning from September 2012 to May 2013.
Schubert’s influence on the art song repertory can be likened to that of Shakespeare on the English language, and this presentation will be a truly monumental event, being the first NYC performance of all 603 of his completed solo songs.
This project is a labor of love for Artistic Directors Lachlan Glen and Jonathan Ware, who together with 51 brilliant singers and five outstanding guest pianists will explore Schubert’s contribution to this art form and bring these extraordinary works to New York’s musical stage. This venture has been met with enthusiastic support from eminent musicians and scholars including Malcolm Martineau, Graham Johnson, Brian Zeger and Susan Youens.
We invite you to join us on this musical journey and encourage you to further explore this website to discover more about the participating artists, the songs themselves, our calendar of performances, the sponsors who have made this possible, and the venues in which these recitals will take place.
Thanks for visiting!
